ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION

At All Terrain, we believe that being outdoors promotes health and wellbeing.  We also share the belief presented in Soft Paths from the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) that most damage to the environment is due to lack of education, not bad intention. Therefore our goals are to:

1)  Educate people on appropriate ways to enjoy the outdoors, naturally
2)  Increase awareness of environmental issues
3) Help enhance people’s overall outdoor experience

This enhancement comes from both All Terrain’s environmental initiatives and its quality products.  This section presents information on outdoor use and environmental issues.  In addition, it provides information on upcoming events and ongoing programs which enable people to get involved.

If there are events, programs or articles that could be of interest to All Terrain’s community of environmental friends, let us know.  Simply send us the information through the Campfire Corner or Contact Us sections of this website.

Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids

Children are the future stewards of our environment.   The earlier they learn about appropriate outdoor use, the more likely they are to incorporate it in their later lifestyle.

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, has introduced Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids program: the PEAK Day Pack.  PEAK was developed to teach kids about responsible behavior and stewardship when they spend time outside.  Based on Leave No Trace’s Seven Principles, PEAK incorporates elements of experiential and environmental education into activities designed for kids, ages 6-12.

The Day Pack is ideal for parents, teachers, camp directors, youth group leaders, or any instructor who leads or teaches outdoor recreation skills or activities to children.

Active Community Environments

To promote physical activity locally, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention developed a Program called Active Community Environments Initiative (ACEs).  These ACEs are settings where people of all ages and abilities can easily enjoy walking, hiking, bicycling, and other forms of recreation within their own community.

These settings:
- Promote physical activity through trails and partnerships
- Develop sidewalks, on-street bicycle facilities, multi-use paths and trails, parks, open space, and recreational facilities.
- Support mixed-use development and a connected grid of streets, allowing homes, work, schools, and stores to be close together and accessible by walking and bicycling.

ACEs also help to improve health, preserve natural resources and decrease air pollution.

Volunteer Vacations

On an American Hiking Society Volunteer Vacation, you visit stunning backcountry locations to construct or rebuild footpaths, cabins and shelters.  In the process, you meet new people, explore canyons, peaks and valleys, enjoy quiet evenings around a fire and come home refreshed and rejuvenated.  Volunteer Vacations are more fun than work!

National Park Service Volunteers

Our National Parks are cherished places that unfortunately are strained by lack of funding, resources and staff.  Volunteers provide an invaluable service and help ensure that the Parks will continue to be enjoyed by future generations.

In FY2003, 122,000 volunteers in the Volunteers-In-Parks Program (VIP) donated 4.5 million hours to the Parks at a value of approximately $77.3 million.  VIPs perform a range of tasks from clearing trails to providing visitor information to assisting archaeologists.
