What can you do to improve the situation? 1. Follow a seven-day watering schedule May 1st through September 30th. this spreads our the watering so there is not a spike in usage (peak) when a lot of customers use water on the same day. In addition, it benefits your plants and grasses to water only once every seven days, since you are promoting deep root growth. When you water, use one inch of water on your watering day, as shown on the chart.
| If your street address ends in... | Then your watering day is... |
| 0 or 9 | Monday |
| 1 or 8 | Tuesday |
| 2 or 7 | Wednesday |
| 3 or 6 | Thursday |
| 4 or 5 | Friday |
2. If you have an underground sprinkler system: a. Make sure the system is set to run from 12 AM to 6AM (per your sprinkler system agreement) and that the length of the run times does not result in water running off your yard and into the street. b. Check that the heas are directed towards the landscaped areas and not the street or sidewalk. c. repair any leaking or improperly functioning parts of your irrigation system.
3. If you use hose-end sprinklers, water from 7 PM to 10 AM only.
4. Do not water on Saturday or Sunday. These days are the "peak" days.
What happens if mandatory restrictions are triggered? These restrictions, with enforcement, require that all watering take place only on your designated watering day. If you get on the seven-day schedule now, you will not have to adjust your watering schedule if mandatory restrictions are triggered.
  TOP OUTDOOR WATER SMART TIPS
Don't over-water your lawn! One inch of water per week in the summer will keep most common grasses healthy. To determine how long you should run your sprinklers, place straight-edged cans at different distrances away from the sprinkler and time how long it takes to fill an average of one inch of water in each can.
Don't abuse the benefits of an automatic sprinkler system by wasting large amounts of water! Set it to provide thorough, but infrequesnt watering. Check sprinkler heads regularly to make sure they are working properly. Install rain shut-off devices and adjust sprinklers to eliminate coverage on pavement.
Prevent evaporation of water! Water lawns early in the morning or in late evening during the hotter summer months.
Plant water-wise, well-adapted and/or native shrubs, trees and grass!
Harvest the rain! Buy a rain barrel or a cistern and collect the water from your gutters to water your plants.
Don't scalp lawns when mowing during hot weather. Taller grass holds moisture better! Keep grass 3 inches tall during the summer and don't cut more than 1/3 of its length at one time. Leave lawn clippings on the lawn instead of bagging.
